About me:

Hello! My name is Desmothene, or Des. I'm a fanbinder, and a member of Renegade Publishing! (@renegadepublishing) What this means is that I have sworn myself to Renegade Publishing's Code of Conduct in how I conduct my binding practices.

I mostly bind works of fanfiction for myself and their authors (and sometimes as gifts). If you're interested in learning how to bookbind for fannish purposes yourself, please check out Renegade for free help, resources, and community!

If you are an author who previously declined a copy and have changed your mind or your situation has changed, feel free to reach out at any time! Any offers to send an author copy remain open indefinitely. All author copies are a gift and do NOT require any form of payment, including shipping, from the author.

I do not accept fanbinding commissions (or commissions of any type at this time).

I have two imprints: Celestial Sphere Press, and Canis Sanguine Press. The '#celestial sphere press' and '#canis sanguine press' tags will get you my work for those imprints.

Pinning this here because I do a lot of interactions on my main blog (@desmothene ) that have to do with the bookbinding side blog (@celestial-sphere-press )

I think using a worse algorithm that consumes exponentially more resources than the alternative is morally reprehensible actually, and that is a general statement extending outside of just LLMs.

I'm talking video games that eat up RAM because the execs didn't want to pay for optimization time. I'm talking search algorithms that are made worse on purpose. I'm talking OS updates that break old hardware to run background services nobody actually needs.

Shoving "AI" into everything is just an extreme case of a wider problem.

tpwrtrmnky

Conversely, that also means that for some applications, machine learning models are the right choice because they're a reasonable alternative in resource usage terms.

While I'm at it, some data centers' cooling systems are actually fine because they're built in cold climates where the waste heat is used to keep houses warm.

The problem is the choice to build giant Heat Generating Machines in the middle of a fucking desert, and then using water that could go to watering crops for cooling.

And while lots of industries use data centers, the extreme need for parallel compute capacity over storage and transmission is a characteristic of machine learning that's troublesome, because the other uses of this extreme amount of compute capacity are niche and not immediately profitable. Lots of scientific work can make use of this type of data center, for example, but publicly funded research doesn't like overpaying for computer time.

The problem is essentially that tech is currently convinced they're going to make consumer services out of a type of hardware that's good for niche, specialized problem solving. They're trying to do this by selling access to a purported Ultimate Do-Everything Algorithm.

The incentives at play here are never going to result in a product that lives up to those expectations.

Anyway when I was working with supercomputers for my PhD one of my daily annoyances was waiting in the queue to run a large-scale physics simulation on like 4 GPUs, while literally half of the computer, several thousand GPUs, was occupied for days on end by a single AI training job.

Mensah said I could learn to do anything I wanted. I learned to leave.

This may be the most important line in Exit Strategy. At first read, this may sound condescending or sarcastic, but I think it meant it literally.

Murderbot hacked its governor module, and still stayed in the company for around four years. It wasn't until after meeting PresAux, and Mensah bought it that it left.

It understood that it was safe, and it had options.

So.

It. Learned. To. Leave.

Broke: Obi-wan is technologically incompetent

Woke: Obi-wan plays up his incompetence in the hopes people won't send space emails to him if he acts like he can't send one

Random senator: Master Kenobi I sent you this email and have yet to receive a response

Obi-wan trying to get out of sending an email: Oh I'm terribly sorry, but I don't use space email. It's difficult for me. The Force seems to make it go on the fritz. I'm sure you understand

He becomes increasingly frustrated with Anakin's attempts at teaching him how to use technology, since Anakin loves answering emails from politicians he barely knows, and also has a hard time thinking of any non-weapon technology as being bad.

Anakin does not understand that Obi-Wan doesn't want everyone to know he knows how email works, because then they won't stop bothering him and getting upset when he doesn't respond immediately.

Obi-Wan using weaponized incompetence to fuck with people he hates is an excellent counter to “Obi-Wan wouldn’t survive without people looking after him”

For @phoenix-soar an edition of her very compelling Darkest Before the Dawn. Mind the tags, Crowley is much more demonic than i usually read, but it is very well written and I was wincing at his plans while really rooting for them to have a happy ending. I read it in one fell swoop and knew it was going to be pomegranates from the first chapter. And luckily emough I had some beautiful pomegranate paper for the endpapers. I hope you like it Phoenix. Thank you so much for sharing!
